The Hand Block Printing Process
1. Designing the Motif
The process begins with a design—often inspired by nature, folk art, or traditional patterns. Skilled artisans carve this design by hand onto wooden blocks made of teak or sheesham. Each block is like a stamp, carrying fine details of the pattern.
2. Preparing the Fabric
The cotton fabric is washed, bleached, and sun-dried to remove starch and impurities. This step ensures the cloth absorbs natural dyes evenly and retains color vibrancy.
3. Mixing Natural Dyes
Colors are prepared using eco-friendly, azo-free, or natural dyes. Each hue is carefully blended to maintain consistency and richness in the final print.
4. Hand Printing with Wooden Blocks
The artisan dips the wooden block into the dye tray and presses it firmly onto the fabric. Each impression is aligned with precision to ensure the pattern flows seamlessly across the cloth. This is done by hand, repeat after repeat, creating intricate designs across large lengths of fabric.
5. Drying & Fixing the Colors
After printing, the fabric is left to dry in the sun. It is then steamed or treated to fix the colors so they remain vibrant after washing.
6. Washing & Finishing
The printed fabric is washed multiple times to remove excess dye and then sun-dried. Finally, it is ironed and cut into the finished product, such as a bedsheet, throw, or cushion cover.
